Let’s Get #NagasStreetStyled!

We all love being fashionable and stylish, don’t we? For many of us, fashion is style! But for Lungzeu and Kuku fashion is something they love and nurture. It is a passion which they have an immense appreciation for.  These two Naga sisters have been curating Naga street style fashion since August 2015 and the result is Nagasstreetstyle page on Instagram! Street style represents the frontier of self-expression and do-it-yourself spirit and this art is greatly appreciated by Lungzeu and Kuku through Nagasstreetstyle page on Instagram.

Kuku and Lungzeu-The co-owners of Nagasstreetstyle

Nagasstreetstyle has over 41.5k followers and 10k page views per week. Well, that is quite a number! Their love for fashion triggered them to start their own fashion blog, which has always been their dream, and they found their way right into their dream via Instagram. This page accentuates the street style fashion sense of stylish and fashionable Nagas. It also acts as a network of people for interacting and appreciating good style.  Huge applaud to the fashion duo for benchmarking Naga street style fashion at a level. They also cover events and scouts for street style fashion photos from Nagas across the country.

“We absolutely love discovering trendy and gorgeous people on Instagram, and we came to realize that most of those people whose style we admired weren’t some people living in New York or London, but they were Nagas right here. It was then we had the idea to start this page to create a network of people who could enjoy good style, and not just another “shoutout” page. We have tried to keep our page relevant and fresh by not posting random trends but according to a certain aesthetic.” says Kuku.

Not only do they love street style fashion, but they also love keeping up with the various fashion weeks from New York, London, Milan and Paris. And they hunnamed (7)ope that one day Nagaland can have its own fashion week which they’d be more than glad to cover it. They believe in style and ethical and sustainable fashion. They wish to see this vision come to live in the future Naga fashion industry.

“Nagas have an inherently beautiful sense of style. Look at the way our people have been dressing for ages, the beautiful mekhelas, shawls, fancy headgears, jewelleries, and the incorporation of colours and textures. However, we would like to acknowledge that Nagas lack an institutional support for fashion as a career, whether it’s designers, models, stylists and bloggers. We believe that Nagas can establish a global presence through fashion but we surely do need better institutional support.” says Kuku , co-owner of Nagasstreetstyle.

Lungzeu is a mother of two who loves good books, good movies and scouting social media for the latest trends and feeds to follow. Kuku is the younger of the two and enjoys reading books and watching movies, and is currently doing an Oscar nominated movie marathon.

Kha Yurna Mataimei : Movie Review by Rinsophy Chamroy

KHA YURNA MATAIMEI (2016)

Rinsophy Chamroy

Cast: Khavangpam Mahung, Timmi Rinpam Lunghar, Wungthingchon Raihing, Kanring Vashum and Wunglensing Longleng.

Director: Riyo Varam

Production House: Meiphung Production

Synopsis: Shatkhai, the main male protagonist of the film (played by Khavangpam Mahung) is a young intellect schooled  in one of the most prestigious university in the country. At  an occasion hosted by his close friend, he meets the female lead Nanphi (played by Timmi Rinpam Lunghar) who had just graduated from Delhi University and happens to be well informed about the male protagonist because of his popularity amongst the community residing in Delhi. They soon fell in love and the film takes its wings through the depiction of love beween two different ideologically inclined individuals.Shatkhai is a man educated with the best of the world, determined to work for the good of his people. His utopian stance is countered by  Nanphi who portrays  the realistic approach to life that many craves for; a good education, a stable government job and prestige. The film mainly oscillates between this two ideological approaches and the crux of the film, the love for the nation above everything else is depicted in the intricacies and web of love, society, and the nation.

Review: Meiphung Production’s first ever production Kha Yurna Mataimei (2016) has provided a fresh impetus to the recent resurgence in Tangkhul Cinema. It has brought about new heights in the production and post production of films among our community. The advent of the digital age of technology has significantly reduced the cost of film production and it has been an added advantage to the new film makers of our generations today. However, with the advantages of cheaper cost of production and the possibility of a number of retakes with a digital video cam recorder or the easy access to a DSLR Camera for video recordings, we seem to have become oblivious to the basics of film making such as the technical language, sound and script etc. As a film studies student, I have always been weary of the technical language of story-telling in Tangkhul films. It’s not just the plot lines and dialogues that narrates a film, visual and sound design plays immense role in telling a story. In fact the technical proficiency of master filmmakers are such that, we often don’t realize the impact of the meticulous sound and visual design that are weaved in a film. One of the things that strikes me about the film as compared to the other Tangkhul films I’ve seen so far, is the immense improvement in the camera work or the technical language per se of filmmaking. In the traditional style of filming a conversation between two people, ‘Shot Reverse Shot’ is often employed. Here, the visual cuts back and forth between the point of view of both the characters. Such basic rules are often neglected in our Tangkhul film industry. However, in this particular film, the filmmaker and his crew have made the effort to employ such techniques to aid the narrative of the film. For example, in the conversation between Shatkhai and his friend in a restaurant, the camera cuts back and forth between their point of views. Thus, lending a more engaging visual experience for the viewers. Another engaging visual experience was the scene between Shatkhai and Nanphi’s heated argument that took place in a beautiful landscape of Ukhrul. The Camera cuts to Nanphi in a middle close up shot while she directly addresses into the Camera. This technique is done in order to place the audience as a first person within the perspectives of the character, that is, Shatkhai seeing Nanphi’s enraged emotions from his eyes. The next subsequent shot is followed by the long shot where both Shatkhai and Nanphi becomes visible in the frame again, hence displacing us from the narrative as the third eye. Such visual narratives helps spectators to intimately engage with the film. In the sound design of the film, there were a lot of improvements in the sound clarity, however there were a few glitches that were quite apparent. The onscreen voice did not sync well with the character’s lip movement in some scenes. The onscreen voice of some characters in the film sounded superficial. For example, the three young villains’ voices sounded older and way beyond their looks. It came apparent to me that it was not their voices. But I don’t know how far my assumptions are true. But since our Tangkhul film industry is at a nascent stage, there is always room for development as it progresses further in the future.

The onus lies in giving better emphasis to the story plotlines in films. Kha Yurna Mataimei(2016) has no exaggerated melodrama which I feel is in tune with the reality of our people: No pirouetting around trees and valleys in song sequences nor moonlight singing as damsels in distress which otherwise is quite common in the history of our industry so far. Good performances by the actors in the film without any prior theatrical backgrounds or any of the related sorts. The film overall was successful in bringing forth their messages across: The love for the Nation as the greatest of all. However, a smooth and knitted narration in the film is due. The transitions amongst the various scenes were quite abrupt. Hence, many viewers might miss out on connecting the various plot lines.

There was a sense of larger than life depiction given to the male protagonist Shatkhai in the film; His pious character and repeated lecturing to every turn of events is uncompelling and a bit turn off. The effort to highlight the pernicious problem of corruption and hooliganism in the society divides the film into the good ones and bad ones. However it was blatantly put across in the film in order to show this divide; Nanphi’s father’s open admission to his greed in a conversation with Shatkhai during his visit to the former’s house. The scene of the tax collector’s conversation with the shop vendor seems like a surreptitious propaganda sponsored by one of our own revolutionary group, and fails to convince to an audience who have had a fair share of the other side of the coin; extra extortions, hooliganism or threats from members of such groups as well. The film fails to find a balance in bringing out the everyday reality of the people at home but becomes too obvious of its propagandistic agenda.

The attempt to look good aesthetically is an obsession in our cinemas and Kha Yur Na Mataimei(2016)also fails to shed that obsession. It comes like a compulsion in our cinemas for women to dress in bright waist clothes/sarongs (kashan) while working in the kitchen with their make up on, Or for the lead actors to live in the best houses in town. And such pomposity often leads to a disconnect from the reality.

An intermission in a film is usually used in order to build a sense of tension which will turn the narrative around. Rather than the climax given before the intermission in the film Kha Yurna Matai(2016), the end of the film, for me, can be appropriated as the climax which will carry the narrative forward. The audience is left craving for more. With more productions lining up, I hope that the film will have a second part and fill some of the voids pertaining the film. In as much as the technical proficiency in films is in need in our Tangkhul film Industry, it is all the more necessary to give great emphasis to the intricacy of story plotlines and scripts of the films. Investing more time on research to develop the story theme and a reflexive consciousness of the environment we live in, will help shape a better film in the future.

0

Thirteen years old Supolepden (Supo) Kichu may have just started his teen, but he ain’t no ordinary kid. A self taught figurative and fashion illustrator whose amazing talent of illustration has got the attention of many people. He was recently featured on Morung Express where he had told them that he started drawing ever since he learn to hold crayons in his hand!

Amazing!!!

supo kichu's illustrations

Well hold on….. What’s more amazing is that this kid is obsessed with Victoria Secret fashion shows (well we all grow ups are obsessed with it wink!) and we are thinking he is a little too young to be watching Victoria’s Secret fashions shows. But before you jump into any conclusion he watched the show as he gets the inspired by the creativity of the show!  When MorungExpress asked about his obsession over Victoria’s Secret, Kichu mentions that his first impression of the show was quite the contrary. When he was in class 3, he saw the show for the first time and found it ‘the dumbest fashion show ever’ but after watching reruns of the show, he realized that the show was really creative, and slowly developed his interest.

Supo Kichu

His work portfolios is full of Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and guess what it all gets sold out in days!

Kichu’s images are mostly done with markers, color pencils, pastels and water colors. Some of his art works, especially his illustrations of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, are digitized and edited for a fresh look through Photoshop. Although he has not undergone any training or classes on art, Kichu says the internet has helped him learn more about illustrations. He is of the view that his generation is fortunate to be born in the age of internet and social media which should be taken advantage for one’s own positive growth.

Supo Kichu

When asked what inspires him the most, Kichu is quick to reply that his family, friends and Victoria’s Secret are what inspire him the most. His parents have been very supportive of his ambition, and his dreams of becoming an illustrator in New York. Kichu tries to balance his interest with his studies and still maintains good grades in school.

Supo Kichu

“My friends ask me what I am going to be. I tell them I am going to New York. I want to be an illustrator in New York City,” says Supo.Way to go lad! Keep the dreams high! May your dreams come true!

Supo is currently studying in Class 7 in Fernwood School and lives with his parents and an elder brother at Upper Agri Colony, Kohima.

This Chef Is Showcasing Naga Cuisine In Italy!

1

The modest but varied and unique Naga cuisine is travelling thousands of miles to tickle the taste buds of top chefs, farmers and diners from all over the world. And displaying the rich Naga culture and ethnic heritage through food is Chef Joel Basumatri, who will be representing Nagaland at the world famous slow food festival Terra Madre Salone del Gusto held in Turin, Italy. The festival to be held on September 22-26 is slated to bring thousands of farmers, food producers, chefs from 150 countries to create a world in which there is good, clean and fair food.

This initiative is an outcome of Slow Food India, the North East Slow Food & Agrobiodiversity Society (NESFAS), Chef Joel and NEbuzz.com, who are making collaborative efforts towards Slow Food Movement in Nagaland and the North East.

In an exclusive interaction with The Morung Express, Chef Joel revealed that he has chosen to cook popular dishes like Awoshi Kipiki Ngo Axone (smoked pork cooked in a sauce of fermented soy-bean), Rosup Aon (assorted vegetables dry cooked in bamboo vinegar), and served with Kouve chutney and Naga red rice.

He will prepare these dishes on the September 23, the second day of the food festival, at a taste workshop planned for 30 people. On the 24th, he is collaborating with Chef Sean Sherman, a Native American of the Sioux tribe well-known for revitalizing indigenous food systems in a modern culinary context. Together, they will serve a hundred guests at a pop-up kitchen in a local restaurant. Here, Chef Joel will prepare dishes which take simple and local ingredients and elevate it to fine dining standards. He has chosen Amurso (chicken rice broth with herbs), Doh sniang nei-iong (fresh pork cooked in black sesame paste), and his own innovative sticky rice and rosella ice-cream.naga cuisine in italy

Taking these simple and honest grassroots dishes, he plans to represent the rich culture and history of the Nagas, food practices, indigenous lifestyle, and the multiple tribes of Nagaland.

For Chef Joel, who is the proprietor of ‘Smokey Joe’s’ and also co-owner of ‘Naga Bowl and Grill’ in Dimapur, ‘Food’ is more than a job. He is one of the first chefs in Nagaland to actively advocate the important message of slow food. The realization for this need, he said, was a result of meeting with the members of  North East Slow Food & Agrobiodiversity Society (NESFAS), and also attending Terra Madre 2014 in Turin and the Indigenous Terra Madre 2015 in Shillong. “I began to be more aware of what I’m serving to my customers- I finally started to question on how food is produced, who produces it, and where it comes from,” he stated.

naga cuisine italy

Chef Joel believes in the philosophy that every individual has a story to tell in terms of food. He added: “Over the recent years I’ve been cooking Naga food but I still feel that I have so much to learn and research more. Food is something which is very vast. And with all the tribes and sub-tribes in Nagaland, it is varied and interesting.” He leaves us with this delicious thought that, “If Chinese and Thai cuisine can become popular worldwide then why not Naga food?”

With several major tribes and many more sub tribes, the food Nagas eat, source and the manner of preparation is a unifying ingredient. It is the guiding force which shapes Naga identity and life. Naga cuisine, which is all about local and organic ingredients, sourced from kitchen gardens at homes or farmers fields and prepared in the traditional way will be right at home at the Terra Madre. Bon appétit, Italy!
