Crime against women is increasing at an alarming rate in the North East states. You can read the statistical report in our earlier post ‘Crime against women in North Eastern states. ‘ However, in recent times we have witnessed not only the increase in crime against women, but also our morality has stooped so low to the point where the innocents are being victimized. Whether its a two years old infant or an 80 years old woman, they are being assaulted and raped.
These are the recent cases of crime against women (here infants and elderly) in some of the NE states. It’s really disturbing to hear such news and more sadden to realize the fact that such social evils is prevailing in our society.
Two and half year old raped by uncle in Meghalaya
On October 22, a two and a half year old toddler was raped by her own 45 year old maternal uncle near the village of Kherapara, about 30 kms from the town of Tura.
The rape has been so severe that the small girl has been crying even in her sleep and is currently on a liquid diet even as doctors have confirmed operations would have to be performed on her.
According to the mother of the victim, “My husband and me went to the field for our daily work and wanted to take the girl with us. However, we put her under the care of her uncle, who wanted to look after her. When we got back we could not find her and went searching everywhere. Finally when we did find her, she was crying and bleeding.”
“Initially we thought it was a leech but when I checked, I was shocked. We immediately took our daughter to Tura for medical care,” added the mother.
An FIR was lodged against the accused, 45-year-old Antonius Marak after which he was arrested.
8 year old raped and killed in Manipur
In what could be termed as a grim reminder of rising crime against women and children, an eight year old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by her neighbour at Tharoijam Maning Leikai on 5th November.
The victim was a class 1 student in Chirangnung Shanglen of Salam. Meanwhile, the alleged rapist has been identified as one Chingangbam Shyamjai (24) son of late Ingocha of Tharoijam Maning Leikai.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at around 1 when the young girl, after returning from school, was heading towards the family’s padd field where her mother was working, to provide tea to her mother. But she never reached the field. Unaware of the situation, her mother, on not finding her when she returned home informed other villagers and set out for a massive search for the missing child. At around 9.30 pm, the search party found the lifeless body of the girl at a field some 200 metres away from her home. They found her face covered with her ‘Phanek’ and her head bludgeoned with stones.
7 year old raped by 52 year old in Kalimpong*
The Kalimpong police arrested a 52 year old man Man Tshering Lepcha on the charges of raping a 4 year old girl on 19th of October 2014.
The 4 year old child was a student at the Dubling Reyong Primar School, and when no one was home then the accused entered her home and raped her. The incident only came to light after World Vision highlighted the issue. Following the outcry, school authorities and locals demanded immediate arrest of the accused and be dealt with in the strictest manner possible.
According to sources, the incident happened in remote Reyong region, which falls under the Nimbong Gram Panchayat in Kalimpong subdivision because of which the parents could not file a police complaint till November 2nd. The police had been trying to apprehend the culprit since then.

80 year old raped by youths in Nagaland
An 80-year-old woman was allegedly raped in her home at Jotsoma village on Saturday, October 25 by two youth. After the offence came to light, the two accused were reportedly caught and beaten up by an angry mob on Sunday before they were handed over to the police. Shockingly, the daughter-in-law of the victim is also said to be under suspicion of conspiring along in the crime.
Police sources admitted that the daughter-in-law is also under their remand along with the two accused youth. However, they remained tight-lipped on the details of the incident as well as the identity of the accused on the grounds that investigation into the case is still on, till late Sunday evening.
Sources from the village disclosed that the victim’s daughter-in-law has questionable moral character and she is believed to be the one who invited the accused, in the absence of her husband, to her home which she shared with the victim.

32 kids molested by teacher in Mizoram
Lalhmingmawia (30), a teacher at the Primary School in Saichal village of Champhai district, was arrested by police on November 7 after parents of two students lodged an FIR in nearby Ngopa police station.
Upon subsequent inquiry and interrogation, it was revealed that the teacher molested the girls aged between 8 and 12 years over the past three years.
The accused was appointed as the teacher of the Primary School by the village council in 2012. The victims earlier did not speak up out of fear as he had threatened the girls with dire consequences, the SP added.

TURA:
4 year old raped by teenager in Tura, Meghalaya
In a shocking case of sexual assault coming in from West Garo Hills district, a four-year-old child was raped by a teenager. The accused has been arrested and remanded to three days judicial custody.
According to a delayed report, the incident took place on November 9 but the Police was apprised of the matter only on November 11 when the family came forward to seek help after admitting the girl to a Hospital in Tura. The girl was in want of urgent medical attention.
The accused was arrested on Sunday and placed under three days of policecustody.
The accused has been identified as 18-year-old King Victor Ch Marak. He is currently lodged in the Tura district jail.
The incident reportedly took place at Koinadubi village, near Dalu, when the accused King Victor taking advantage of the girl child playing alone in the compound of her home lured her away.
The incident was brought to light after the girl was found bleeding and crying in pain.
