The breed originated from the island of Java, Indonesia. It was first imported into Europe in 1998 by Dutch breeder Jan Steverink. Currently stocks are kept in the Netherlands, Germany, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. There are several varieties of the Ayam Cemani including the Swedish Black Chicken. It is thought that Ayam Cemani may also earlier have been brought to Europe by Dutch seamen who had numerous contacts in both Africa and Asia.
Ayam means “chicken” in Indonesian and Cemani is “completely black” in Javanese.

This breed of chicken originates from Indonesia. It has jet black ink feathering with a green or purple sheen, it’s skin is black and if you cut open this crazy black bird you will find all it’s organs, muscle and bones to be black. The only ‘light’ this bird has is it’s cream – off white coloured eggs.
This bird is also known as the “Lamborghini of the chicken world.”
This bird is so rare and sought after for it’s ‘magical’ properties that a breeder in Indonesia sells his stock for $2,500 PER, yes that is PER BIRD!!! and $5,000 for a pair and yes, he does sell them and often.
This is the most cray cray thing I’ve ever heard of in my life!!! 🙂 There is another bird that’s all black too. The bird looks like a crow. I’m really exited because those two birds are tots weird so they can be TWINZZEEZZ!!! 🙂 🙂
