Assam filmmaker to make Cannes debut


Guwahati: English language feature film 1962: My Country Land made by Partha Borgohain, who hails from Assam, will premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival on May 18. The film is based on the 1962 Indo-China war.

Produced by Marbom Mai under the banner of Living Dreams, the film was shot in parts of picturesque Tawang and Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh. Guru Rewben Mashangva is the music composer in collaboration with Shankar Shankini.

Written and directed by Chow Partha Borgohain, who is also the film’s cinematographer, the story revolves around Luitya, an Army Lance Naik who is given the responsibility of mapping along the India-China border. Luitya, along with his porter, loses his way in the rough and unwelcoming terrain until they reach a village.

In the village, Luitya meets Chan, a Chinese trader with dark secrets, and the village chief’s daughter Yaka. Luitya learns that the village is finds place neither on the Indian map and nor on the Chinese one. Conflict breaks out between Luitya and Chan to take over the patch of the land.

Starring Aham Sharma, Lhakpa Lepcha, Daniel Shin Han and Ketholeno Kense, the film showcases the struggle during the approaching war and how they are able to believe, and not believe, each other.

“I’m happy to have finished the film and happier that it is getting released,” Borgohain told TOI about his maiden venture.

Borgohain said, “We shot for 75 days in Tawang and Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh, and Sohra in Meghalaya, besides a few shots in Guwahati.”

Partha, after his schooling in Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh, completed a photography and filmmaking course at the Madras Christian College and later joined the Mindscreen Film School to study film and motion photography. Thereafter, he worked as an assistant with renowned cinematographer and director Rajiv Menon, where he worked on various feature films and advertisements.
