MTB Downhill Track
MTB Downhill Track

With a downpour in the noon, an hour before the scheduled race, the wet track became a challenge and the flag off for the race had to be postponed to an hours delay.

It is worth a mention that the CHIKO Adventure hosted the first ever MTB Downhill Race Trophy in 2017 during the Shirui Lily State Festival 2017. The second edition ultimately got bigger and better where the race attracted a huge audience. The crowd/audience seemed to be intrigued by the nature of the sport where bikers had to brave the tough terrain of steep rocky trails and slippery plains after making their way through the woods. The cheering was astounding and the adrenaline rush seemed apparent not just for the riders but also in the crowd.

The winner, Apshai Niangti, who had participated in MTB Downhill in the past commented that the track had been one of the most challenging ones so far. Rinku Thakur, the 1st runner up also adds on to it saying that this has been the second toughest track he had ridden on given that Himachal has one of the toughest Downhill track that’s been professionally built for elite riders. This calls for a special mention for the CHIKO Adventures for being able to create such a reputation in a short span of time and shows that they are taking the right step in the right direction in putting NE-States on the radar of becoming an international bike park.

65th National Film Awards: Assamese film ‘Village Rockstars’ wins Best Feature Film

0

In a breakthrough moment for Assamese cinema, Rima Das’ directorial ‘Village Rockstars’ was named the Best Feature Film at the 65th National Film Awards here on Friday. It is after 29 years that an Assamese film has won the honour.

Jahnu Barua’s ‘Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai’ had won the award last in 1987. Set in Rima’s own village Chhaygaon near Guwahati, ‘Village Rockstars’ is the story of “poor but amazing children” who live a fun-filled life. The film opens with the children having fun as a rock band. As the story progresses, it captures the whole gamut of fun that these rural children are having despite living a life of poverty and deprivation.

Rima has also won the Best Editing honour for ‘Village Rockstars’, which has won the Best Child Artist honour for Bhanita Das. It has also been recognised for Best Location Sound Recordist Mallika Das’ work. The Best Assamese Film award went to Utpal Borpujari for ‘Ishu’.

Borpujari is ecstatic about the win. “I am very happy to win this award as ‘Ishu’ is my debut feature film. I am happy for my cast and crew who supported me throughout,” he told. He is also emotional about the victory of ‘Village Rockstars’.

“I am more happy about ‘Village Rockstars’ because after 29 years, an Assamese film has won the Best Feature Film Award.”

“What is more special about ‘Village Rockstars’ is that it is a totally independent film which Rima Das made with her own resources with a very small crew. For such a film to win the National Award is a big achievement. This film has been widely acclaimed in international film circles,” Borpujari said in a statement.

About the Movie:
Plot Summary

Dhunu is in a group of real Village Rock stars. Growing up in depravation, she learns to manage her life within surroundings of hostile natural calamities and weaving dreams of owning a guitar!

Ten-year-old Dhunu (Bhanita Das) lives in Chayagaon village in Assam with her widowed mother (Basanti Das) and elder brother Manabendra (Manabendra Das). While helping her mother sell snacks at a local event, she becomes mesmerized by a band that’s performing there. The part that’s so delightfully hokey: the boys belt out their hits with musical instruments made of Styrofoam. She proceeds to copy them, carving a guitar Jimi Hendrix would be proud of.

Impressionable and tenacious at the same time, Dhunu reads a comic book and decides she wants to form a band playing real instruments. Rupee by rupee, she begins to save for a used guitar. She reads an article in a scrap newspaper and decides that positive thinking can make the guitar materialize. But as floods destroy the family’s crops, Dhunu must choose her priorities. The whole premise sounds endearingly naive, yet Dhunu’s brilliance in everything she does transforms the cheesy bromides into a rallying cry for hope and self-reliance. The language of the movie is Kamrupi, a distinct dialect of Assam.

The Twin Effect is made up of Opang Jamir and Imkong Kichu. Opang Jamir is also the frontman of Avancer band and Imkong Kichu is currently pursuing music at the Jam Tree.

Here’s Chasing Shadows by The Twin Effect

You left me chasing shadows
Now I am blind and I can only see
 your fading shadows
You left me chasing shadows
Even so, I’ll follow
even if Am Chasing Shadows.

Here’s the beautiful lyrics

“Chasing shadows “

It’s Late in the Evening
The sun has shied away,
Rainbow alleys rising above
I hug myself  as I remembered
Your warmth that ain’t no longer with me.
Now I sleep on the sofa, just me
Coz I can never get used to the cold bed

Oh oh oh oh oh oh chasing shadows (2x)
You left me chasing shadows
Now I am blind and I can only see
your fading shadows
You left me chasing shadows
Even so, I’ll follow
even if Am Chasing Shadows.

Your Dreams invade my nights.
And If not this memory,
I would never wake.
You saved me under the cherry trees,
But you left me wounded and alive
Though We made no promises
I hoped you’d stay anyway

Oh oh oh oh oh oh chasing shadows (2x)
You left me chasing shadows
Now I am blind and I can only see
your fading shadows
You left me chasing shadows
Even so, I’ll follow
even if Am Chasing Shadows.

Though NE states may seem to be a safer place for women as compared to other parts of the country, we still have a lot more to improve. It’s all heartbreaking to see the number of rape cases of minors below the age of 12 yrs. As per the NCRB reports, 162 girl child below the age of 12 yrs were raped in NE.

Should other NE states follow Arunachal Pradesh and consider passing a bill approves death penalty for rape of girls under 12?

Here’s how SanskritMagazine links Arunachal, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya and Nagaland as an integral part of Mahabharata

2

A hindu based online magazine, sanskritmagazine, had published an article ‘North-East Tribals and their connection to Ancient India’ where they claim that the indigenous tribals of the North East believes they are an integral part of Mahabharata  and Ramayana and that the indigenous tribals are still following their traditions.

Here’s a state wise look at their claim.

Arunachal

Out of the 54 tribes of Arunachal Pradesh, there is a tribe called Idu Mishmi which considers itself to be from the lineage of Krishna’s wife, Rukmini.  Their fables tell tales of Rukmini as the princess of current day Bhishmanagar.  The King, her father was Bhishmak and she had a brother named Rukmi.

When Rukmini fell in love with Krishna, Rukmi strongly opposed the marriage and arranged for her to marry Shishupal to form an alliance.  Rukmini, hearing of this agreement, secretly sent a message to Lord Krishna to come and rescue her.

As they were eloping, Rukmi caught up to the two and in the duel that ensued, lost to Krishna.  When Krishna was about to kill him, Rukmini begged to have her brother’s life spared.  Krishna agreed but as punishment, shaved Rukmi’s head with his Sudarshana Chakra – a visible sign of defeat – and let him go free.

The Idu Mishmi tribe has a characteristic style of chopping their hair due to which they are called Chulikatas.  It is explained as an act of punishment inflicted by Krishna for the initial resistance offered to the marriage which later became the mark of honour.

The Idu Rukmini is highly venerated by them as Inyi Maselo or Great Mother.

The most important legendary account connected with the Arunachal tribe of Mishmis is that of the Brahmakunda. It is also popularly known as Parasuram Kunda; for, Parasuram, according to the Kalika Purana came to the Kunda to cleanse himself of the sin he had incurred by slaying his own mother Renuka on his father’s orders. This Kunda is in the heart of the Mishmi area. It is traditionally thought that the Parasuram Kunda as a holy place was originally a Mishmi institution and the Mishmis used to collect toll from the visiting pilgrims.

Meghalaya

The Khasi tribe of Meghalaya are famous for their archery skills.  However, this archery is peculiar because they use two fingers only in shooting and discharging the arrows in place of a finger and thumb as done by other archers.

Most of the people in the Khasi tribe have never heard of Eklavya but legend has it that one of their ancestors gave up his thumb in Guru Daskshina and therefore the thumb should never be used during archery.

Nagaland

Dimapur is the largest city in Nagaland.  Some people believe that this word is a corruption of Hidimbapur, depicting the city of Hidimba of Mahabharata, wife of Bhima and mother of Ghotokacha. He is believed to be the progenitor of Kacharis, a kingdom that was prosperous once in the region.  Kachhar dynasty is the descendents of Kirat dynasty described in Mahabharata.

There is a place in Dimapur where huge chess pieces still lie around in dilapidated state. Folklore marks this to be the place where Bhima and Ghotokacha played chess.

Assam

Many in the Bodo tribe of Assam consider themselves to be descendants of Brahma and those not converted into Christianity practice Brahmoism.

Another tribe of Assam, the Karbis claim to be the offspring of Sugriva. Karbis believe they came to the Northeast in search of purthemi kungripi (Sita Mata) during the Treta yuga, and failed to return to Ayodhya according to “SABIN ALUN“, a Karbi version of Ramayana.

Manipur

Ukhrul in Manipur connects itself with Uloopi, the Naga wife of Arjuna who played a major role as a stepmother to Bhabhruvahana and also in saving Arjuna’s life.  Iravan was the son of Arjuna and Uloopi.  The Thangkul tribe is well known for its martial arts and they comprise of over 40% of members of National Socialist Council of Nagland that wants to establish their own sovereign state of Nagalim.

The social researcher claimed that excluding the small percent of people who could not celebrate the festival due to some inconveniences, the total Hindu population spend around Rs 12,610,60,900 per year in celebrating Yaoshang, Sajibu Cheiraoba, Diwali and Ningol Chakkouba.
