North East India often referred to as Paradise Unexplored is among the only region in India where the scenic beauty and the natural resources etc are yet to be explored. But the region is sadly explored quite well by the insurgents. Every NE state is plagued with insurgency problems. Yes, the reason for the rise of insurgency vary from states to states. While the insurgency in some states are fighting for development and recognition, while some others are fighting for their own rights to self determination. However the purpose of this post is not to discuss the reason for the rise of insurgencies in the region, but to throw a light on the fatalities that the region had suffered due to insurgency problem over the period.
In the last sixteen years, from 2000 to 2015 there have been a total of 12,219 insurgency related killings in the region. Out of these 5087 people are civilians, 1121 security personnel and 6011 insurgents.

ARUNACHAL PRADESH
The insurgency related killings in Arunachal during the year 2010-2015 is comparatively low as compared to other NE states. During this period of 6 years, 59 insurgencies, 5 civilians and 5 Security Force Personnel were killed. However if we look back 10- 15 years ago, the statistics were much higher as shown in the figure below:
As you can see from the graph above, more than 200 people lost their lives during the period from 2000-2005. Out of these, 70 were civilians, 137 insurgents and 23 Security personnel.
ASSAM
Assam is one state in NE where insurgency problems are still at large and the casualties therefore are at an alarming rate. Here’s a look at the insurgency related killings in Assam during the period from 2010-2015.
A total of 808 people have been killed in the last six years in Assam. Out of these 343 are civilians, 43 are security personnel and 422 killed are insurgents.
Here’s the statistics of insurgency related killings in Assam during the years 2000 to 2005
The statistics from 2000 to 2005 is quite alarming. A total of 2910 people lost their lives during this six years period including 1323 civilians, 202 security personnel and 1385 insurgents.
Though the rates had come down over the years, the number of people killed due to insurgency related cases is still at large in Assam.
MANIPUR
Manipur is one of the state in NE where the fatalities due to insurgencies are on the higher side. From the year 2010 to 2015 there have been 134 civilians killed, 70 security personnel and 312 insurgents killed.
Comparing that with a decade ago, the casualties were much more higher. A total of 404 civilians were killed, 243 security personnel and 782 insurgents were killed in the period from 2000 to 2005.
In the last 16 years from 2000 on wards, a total of 3539 people have been killed in insurgency related cases. Out of which 1003 were civilians, 421 security force personnel and 2115 insurgents.
MEGHALAYA
A total of 294 people have lost their lives in insurgency related cases in Meghlaya from 2010 to 2015. Out of which 111 are civilians, 35 security personnel and 148 insurgents.
The statistics remains more or less the same a decade ago. From the year 2000 to 2005, a total of 262 people have been killed out of which 100 are civilians, 44 are security personnel and 118 are insurgents.
MIZORAM
Mizoram has recorded only 6 insurgency related killings in the last 6 years from 2010 to 2015
The insurgency related killings in the state from 2000 to 2005 is also only 23
NAGALAND
In Nagaland there were a total of 172 insurgency related killings from 2010 to 2015. Out of which 49 are civilians, 9 security personnel and 23 insurgents.
It was a little more than double during the period from 2000 to 2005 with a total of 375 insurgency related killings out of which 90 are civilians, 12 security force personnel and 273 are insurgents
TRIPURA
Among the NE States, Tripura recorded the least insurgency related killings in the last six years from 2010 to 2015 with only 10 cases of killings. Out of this 10, 3 are civilians, 3 security personnel and 4 insurgents.
However the statistics from 2000 to 2005 is quite shocking with a total of 1536 killings. Out of this, 1081 were civilians, 175 security personnel and 280 insurgents.
Enough people have died, enough civilians have died! Let there be peace in the NE!
